Highlights

I love how Yarros has been gradually widening her universe book by book. We started with Violet’s personal journey in Basgiath. Then, we went outside its walls. And now, we’ve traveled to islands far and beyond.

What to Expect

  • Cryptic narration
  • Multiple POVs at the end
  • Slower pace than previous books
  • Less tension
  • Wider world
  • Endless puzzles
  • Many games of logic and strategy
  • New characters, including dragons
  • A creed system with more protagonism
  • Some spice
  • Cliffhanger ending
  • A lot of speculation for what’s next
  • Character progression
🧐
It was curious how Violet and Xaden exchanged a bit their roles in this book. She is more the assertive leader, while he acts as the supportive and protective weapon.

What I Missed

  • I’m all for this new romantic Xaden, the bodyguard. I’m not going to lie though. I missed a bit the strategist in him, the wingleader—although I get his role in this book had different shapes and needs.
  • And this is not that I missed it. I understand and respect the author’s choices. That said, I’m not sure I’m totally on board with her decision of moving from point A to point C at the end, and completely bypassing B. I’m all for leaving secrets and important puzzles for later. However, here there was no bridge. So, moving from A to C felt like jumping into the abyss—too many things unsaid. The whole story is now wide open 🥹
