📚 I received an ARC for the first book in this series.
Highlights
I like C.N. Crawford’s creative mind. Their premises are usually very intriguing and the stories with a lot of potential. Furthermore, you can see the mythology and influences behind them.
What to Expect
- Super slow born romance
- Prohibited love and celibacy
- Sexual tension
- Implicit enemies to lovers relationship
- Diverse fantastical creatures
- Deadly powers
- Slavery, torture, violence and death
- Shady alliances and power plays
- Strong fighter as FMC
- Secret identities
What I Missed
- Just as the authors are very creative when coming up with their worlds and stories, I often lack some final punch in the intrigue, especially when solving the climatic scenes. They build the suspense and when the time finally comes, the solution feels too easy, too quick, too simple. Something more is missing there for me.
- The romance here didn’t hook me. There was attraction and sexual tension, but it took too long for the declarations to happen, so I didn’t feel their evolution as lovers. I also needed more romance per se.
- The story is entertaining, but it left me feeling like there was some cohesion missing—e.i. small open loops, characters floating around, clearer motivations to support actions, contradicting support/alliances…
📈
All that said, I can see some evolution in C.N. Crawford’s writing from these earlier series to the latest ones.
