I got an ARC for this first book in a series.
Highlights
One of my favorite themes has always been defying religious entities and their codes of conduct (with all due respect to believers). So, in here, we’re taken back to the Inquisition and the hunt of heretics, in this case, humans with ‘cursed’ magic. And not only that, there’re other mysterious creatures, one even with a dark power peculiar from what we know about its kind.
💡
I like C.N. Crawford’s versatile use of fantastical creatures throughout their series. They might choose fae. In another book, we’ll have demons, and then witches, etc.
What to Expect
- Lust more than romance
- Abuse of power founded in religious beliefs
- Hunger-Games-type of trials
- Mythical creatures
- Different sorts of magic
- Morally-grey characters
What I Missed
- I didn’t understand the book as a whole. I believe it’s due to the fact that there’s not much info on the world itself and the characters’ backgrounds. Therefore, it’s difficult to emotionally connect with them and understand their motivations, mission and why they’ve become what they are. Only Elowen, the female MC, had a clear goal, but I’m not sure it justifies or can sustain what’s sure to come in the series.
